Four years ago , Google announced that it would stop supporting third-party cookies in Chrome, in order to adapt to the new global digital context, in which people demand greater privacy. Although the gradual elimination was initially scheduled to begin in 2022, the company has had to extend the deadline twice already , and this has happened again this year.
On a quarterly basis, Google and the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) publish reports on the state of the Privacy Sandbox for the Web . In this context, through the report published on April 23, 2024, the company explained that it understands how challenging the task of on page seo service reconciling divergent comments within the industry, regulators and developers can be, and that it will continue to work closely with all actors in the ecosystem. In addition, they state that the CMA needs sufficient time to review evidence and proof that they have requested from market players.
Because of these two key issues, Google will not be able to “complete the elimination of third-party cookies during the second half of the fourth quarter.”
What is the new deadline for deleting third-party cookies?
In its quarterly report, the CMA has stated that “Subject to resolving our remaining competition concerns, Google now aims to proceed with the phase-out of third-party cookies from early 2025. Under the Commitments, it is Google’s responsibility to decide when the Suspension Period is triggered .” However, we could say that this is not a definitive date, as has been the case with the deadlines that have been reported from 2020 to date.
It is important to mention that since 2020, Google has worked to ensure that its entire web measurement and analysis ecosystem operates within a context of respect for data privacy and the anonymity of individuals on the Internet, prioritizing first-party data.
